A Little About Me and What I Bring to the Table

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be an astronaut.  I was told, “Oh, sweetie, you can’t do that.  That’s a boy’s job.”  I was heart-broken and devastated.  I thought my dreams were dashed. But when I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, Marion Ravenwood stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Indiana Jones.  Finally, I knew my calling, and no one could tell me it was only for boys.  I was going to be an archeologist.

I joined the archeology club at school - it was called Abantu - and I signed up for my first dig at Cahokia Mounds in southern Illinois during the summer between freshman and sophomore year. It was a disaster.

I should begin by explaining that I am what polite people call fair-skinned (and what not-so-polite people call white as a sheet).  Who knew that archeological digs are completed under the torrid and hellish heat of a blazing and unforgiving sun? I guess I should have known that, but my 14-year-old mind had romanticized reality.

And then there were my ACT scores. I was shocked.  Apparently, standardized tests did not see me as a scientist.  In fact, according to the ACT, I was almost certainly supposed to do something with communications and writing.

After over twenty years of teaching high school and college English, working as a freelance writer, and editing and proofreading countless texts, I realize that high-stakes testing got it right.      I am exactly where I am supposed to be, doing what I am supposed to be doing. However, those old dreams have not died.  I still have the adventurous spirit of an astronaut and the cultural curiosity of an archeologist.  Instead of a trowel, though, I use literary analysis to unearth facts about Anglo-Saxons or the Middle Ages.  Instead of a spacecraft, I use my creativity to venture into the unknown.  I combine precision and detail to help you meet your writing and communication needs.

Writing Copy

If you have an idea, but you are not quite sure how to put it into words, I can help you communicate your thoughts to meet your goals.

Proof-reading

Perhaps you already have a piece of writing, but you do not feel that it is polished.  I can edit and/or proof your writing to make it ready to go.

Consulting

In addition to helping education outsiders with their writing, I love to help education insiders with ideas, curriculum, and strategies.
